Changes Ahead for Sydney Airport’s Terminal 2

Changes Ahead for Sydney Airport’s Terminal 2

Sydney Airport has unveiled its design vision for the much-anticipated overhaul of the T2 Domestic terminal, the first major redevelopment in more than three decades at Australia’s busiest domestic terminal.

The $200 million investment aims to provide a faster, smoother, and more efficient travel experience for the 17 million passengers that use T2 every year, focusing on next-generation technology, modern facilities, and greater operational efficiency.

Once complete, it is anticipated that 95 per cent of passengers will travel from the kerbside to airside in less than 15 minutes.

In line with the Australian Government’s security mandate to install ‘standard three’ security equipment by the end of 2025, the terminal will feature next-generation security technology and state-of-the-art scanners across seven processing lanes totalling 26 metres.

These new systems will allow passengers to leave items like laptops and liquids in their carry-on luggage, dramatically reducing security processing times, with each lane able to process 500 passengers per hour— a 113 per cent increase compared to the current average throughput of 235 passengers per hour.

The streamlined security design will feature dedicated lanes for family and assistance, while two brand new lifts post-security will provide a more seamless experience for passengers to access the food court and gate lounges.

Scott Charlton, CEO of Sydney Airport, said: “We are excited to announce our design vision for the T2 Domestic terminal. We believe these changes will make the T2 experience one of the fastest and most efficient in Australia which is a great outcome for passengers and our airline partners.

“While we understand that the upgrade works may cause temporary disruption, we want to thank passengers and our airline partners for their patience and understanding during this important transformation. We’re working hard to minimise any inconvenience and ensure the terminal remains operational throughout the process.”

OMAN AIR TO JOIN ONEWORLD ALLIANCE IN 2025

Oman Air will officially join the Oneworld alliance in 2025, slightly delayed from the original “late 2024” timeline. In a positive update, the airline is already collaborating with Qantas to offer reward seats through Qantas points.

The Muscat-based carrier will join fellow Middle Eastern airlines Qatar Airways and Royal Jordanian, as well as a global roster of Oneworld members including American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, JAL, Malaysia Airlines, and Qantas.

“As we look toward our highly anticipated Oneworld membership next year, we’re excited to offer even more rewards and seamless travel across all member airlines,” said Con Korfiatis, CEO of Oman Air.

Oneworld VP Gerhard Girkinger added that Oman Air will bring “a truly unique destination to the alliance,” further enriching the network’s global reach.

Operating from its hub at Muscat International Airport, Oman Air connects to five key Oneworld member hubs: Amman, Colombo, Doha, Kuala Lumpur, and London Heathrow. The airline already has codeshare agreements in place with fellow Oneworld members Malaysia Airlines, Qatar Airways, Royal Jordanian, and Sr iLankan Airlines.

As a full member of Oneworld, Oman Air will offer travellers even more options, including the ability to plan seamless round-the-world journeys with Oneworld. Whether booking with cash or using frequent flyer points for a multi-city award, passengers will now have even greater flexibility and access to the full range of Oneworld’s global network.

Historic Pitt Street landmark in Sydney to become luxury hotel.

SYDNEY HOUSE HERITAGE REVIVAL SET TO SHAKE UP SYDNEY OFFERING IN 2027

A 136-room luxury hotel is set to become a key addition to Sydney’s accommodation scene when the AU$800 million Sydney House development is completed in 2027.

The hotel will be part of the redevelopment of the iconic City Tattersalls Club building, a 130-year-old, state heritage-listed landmark located at 196-204 Pitt Street in the heart of Sydney’s CBD.

The 50-storey Sydney House project will restore the historic site, transforming it into a striking new landmark tower. Richards Crookes Construction, well-known for its expertise in heritage projects—including the recent redevelopment of Harry Seidler’s Sirius Building into luxury apartments—began construction in early 2023.

In addition to the hotel, the development will also feature 241 luxury apartments, both promise to make the most significant impact on Sydney’s hospitality offering when it opens in 2027.

New Lufthansa Allegris First Class experience takes flight

NEW LUFTHANSA ALLEGRIS FIRST CLASS EXPERIENCE TAKES FLIGHT

The new First Class suites set a fresh standard for comfort and privacy, offering nearly one-meter-wide seats that can be heated or cooled to suit individual preferences. Each suite boasts ceiling-high walls, a lockable door, a large table, wide seating, and a huge screen for entertainment. Wireless over-ear headphones complete the immersive experience. A personal wardrobe provides ample space for travellers to store their belongings and change comfortably. For added luxury, individual lamps allow passengers to customise the lighting to their preferred ambience. The exclusive Suite Plus offers couples the option to travel together in the same suite, combining maximum comfort with flexibility.

Following an initial technical introduction phase, Lufthansa will begin offering the new First Class product to its most loyal guests by invitation. As more aircraft are equipped with the new First Class, passengers will gradually be able to book and upgrade to this premium service.

In other exciting news, Lufthansa has been awarded the APEX Innovation Award for 2024 for its groundbreaking in-flight entertainment. Adelaide’s new Qantas Club lounge is officially open.

ADELAIDE’S NEW QANTAS CLUB LOUNGE IS OFFICIALLY OPEN

Qantas customers travelling through Adelaide are set to receive an upgrade to their airport experience with the construction of a new lounge precinct set to commence this month.

The development includes a brand-new Domestic Business Lounge which takes inspiration from Kangaroo Island’s Flinders Chase National Park and a full refurbishment of the current Qantas Club and Chairmans Lounge.

The first stage of construction includes the fit out of the Qantas Club, which is expected to open in mid-November, ahead of the new Domestic Business Lounge welcoming its first customers in mid-2025.

While the footprint of the lounge space will remain the same, through the redesign of currently under-utilised spaces, the total seating capacity will increase by more than 10 per cent.

The interiors of the new lounge precinct will be inspired by the beauty of South Australia, drawing from the state’s landscapes, culture and iconic food and flavours. South Australian sourced furniture, lighting and natural materials will feature in the lounges, along with fittings curated by the Jam Factory and artwork created by local First Nations artists.

The redevelopment is part of the national carrier’s $100 million investment in upgrading and enhancing its global lounge network.

Qantas Executive Manager for Product and Service, Phil Capps, said the lounge upgrades reflect the needs of customers flying from Adelaide and excellence in South Australian architectural and interior design.

“Our local design philosophy means the new Adelaide Lounge Precinct will celebrate the best of South Australia. From the furnishing and artworks through to the premium food and beverages we want to give our customers a taste of South Australia every time they fly with us. Our customers can also expect to see more of the features they’ve told us they value the most.”

“We’re installing extra seating throughout the precinct to provide more space to work and around 80 per cent of seats will have access to power stations and device ports so customers can easily charge up before their flight.”

Throughout the construction phase, the existing Qantas Club will continue to operate for eligible customers one hour prior to the first Qantas operated service until the last departure. A ‘Grab and Go’ offering with premium breakfast options and barista coffee will be available during busy morning peak travel times if the lounges reach capacity.
