Important Changes for Dual Citizens Travelling to the UK With a British Passport
A significant change is coming for dual citizens travelling to the United Kingdom, and it is essential travellers are aware before booking or departing.
From 25 February 2026, dual citizens who hold British nationality must travel using a valid British passport or a Certificate of Entitlement when travelling to the UK by plane, train or ferry.
Travellers who attempt to use a non-British passport, even if they hold a valid UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) on that passport, may be denied boarding at their departure airport.
What This Means for Dual Citizens
• If you hold British nationality, you must present a British passport or Certificate of Entitlement
• This applies to arrivals by air, rail and sea
• A valid ETA on a non-British passport will not be sufficient
• Airlines, rail operators and ferry services can refuse boarding if correct documentation is not presented
This change is designed to align entry requirements for British dual nationals and applies regardless of where your other citizenship is held.
Travellers are strongly encouraged to check their passport status well ahead of travel and ensure their British passport is valid before departure.
